Artemis Tree Services proudly joined this year’s Fund4Trees Urban Tree Life Cycle (UTLC) Charity Bike Ride, a two-day event dedicated to promoting the importance of tree establishment and aftercare in urban environments.
The event, held on 10–11 September, sponsored by Nurture Group, combined cycling with hands-on tree care activities and educational workshops. It aimed to highlight a vital message: planting trees is only the first step – long-term care is essential to ensure they survive and flourish.
On Day One, Managing Director Simon N’jie took part in the 80-mile return ride from Birmingham to Worcester. Along the route, riders participated in the re-pollarding of an ancient oak tree, extending its lifespan and supporting biodiversity. Pupils from Cherry Orchard Primary School then planted a succession oak, applying woodchip mulch from the pollard to help protect the newly planted tree.
On Day Two, Artemis Marketing Manager Juliet joined the 15-mile community ride around Birmingham, which featured workshops at The Hub, Castlevale, and Ambridge House. These sessions engaged schoolchildren and local groups in practical young tree aftercare, demonstrating best practices for supporting the survival and growth of newly planted trees.
The event was expertly organised by Fund4Trees founder Russell Ball, who also delivered engaging and educational talks to schoolchildren. His sessions helped inspire the next generation by showing how vital proper aftercare is to ensure that urban trees thrive.
The event reinforced an important message: tree planting is only the beginning. Research shows that of 687 trees planted, only 79% survived, with just 42% in good condition. Proper aftercare is crucial if we want to see trees grow to maturity and provide the full benefits they offer to people, wildlife, and the environment.
Simon N’jie, Managing Director of Artemis Tree Services, commented: “This year’s UTLC ride was inspiring. Taking part in both the physical challenge and the tree care activities reminded us all how vital it is to look after trees beyond planting. Seeing the children so engaged was a real highlight – they are the future guardians of our treescapes.”
