Ealing Council prides itself on being one of the greenest boroughs in London thanks to its tree-lined streets and parks, offering many benefits to its residents.
The well-being enhancing trees and green spaces require a lot of maintenance and need to be closely managed to keep them in good condition and prevent damage to roads and pavements.
Each year the Council carries out routine maintenance and planting of huge numbers of trees. The Borough has some 26,000 highway trees and around 1% of these fail each year. The Council make sure that at least one tree is planted for every tree that has to be removed. In addition there are some 20,000 park & cemetery trees plus yet more trees on housing land that need looking after.
The Council has to carry our regular ad hoc inspections to keep the trees in good condition and occasionally find trees that needs emergency remedial work done, especially after extreme weather.
Artemis was delighted to win a contract with Ealing Borough Council and be involved in its pruning programme across the borough, helping to manage trees in compliance with the London Tree Officers Association Risk Limitation Strategy.
Meeting a timetable set by the Council, sticking to completion dates, using appropriate levels of staff & equipment on-site, Artemis were kept busy for several months working on the trees.
Working in all weather conditions, carrying out procedures such as crown reductions & targeted removal, our teams were working in largely built-up areas. The teams had to consider urban services including electricity & telephone cables, water, sewage & gas pipes whilst causing minimum disruptions to traffic and pedestrians and ensuring access for the disabled, buggies and the elderly.
