What We Did

Location: Pinner

Service provided: Tree dismantling, tree reduction, deadwood removal and pruning

Tree work overview

We were asked to carry out a combination of tree dismantling and crown reduction works to two mature roadside trees at a domestic property. The goal was to reduce overextended growth, remove hazardous deadwood, and improve clearance above a road and footpath to reduce the risk of branch failure.

Background

The site contained two large mature trees positioned adjacent to a road and a footpath.

The first was a mature Robinia (Robinia pseudocacia) approximately 15 metres tall with a broad crown extending over the road. The tree contained significant deadwood and a week union within the canopy, increasing the likelihood of limb failure.

The second was a mature Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) of a similar height. Its broad dense crown had developed long lateral branches that extended well beyond the main structure of the tree, making the canopy heavier and more exposed to strong winds.

The Tree Work

Robinia

The Robinia was approximately 15 metres in height with a crown spread of around 9 metres. During the inspection, we identified delaminating bark with enclosed sapwood and dead sections, evidence of insect activity at one union, and water emerging from another union on a dry day, indicating a cavity within the stem.

The work we carried out involved dismantling the tree to rear ground level. Due to the extent of the deflects and the surrounding targets, including the property, footpath and road, removal was the recommended to eliminate the risk of failure.

Sycamore

The Sycamore was approximately 15 metres tall with a crown spread of around 10 metres.

The work we carried out involved reducing the lateral spread by up to 2 metres on all sides, back to previous pruning points. The finished crowns dimensions were approximately 9 metres in height and 6 metres in lateral spread, helping to manage the size of the tree for its location.

Safety and Site Management

Due to the roadside location, safety planning was a key part of the job. Our team carried out a site-specific risk assessment, established exclusion zones, and coordinated the work to minimise disruption.

Using professional climbing and rigging techniques, we safely dismantled and lowered branches where necessary. All arisings were removed from site and responsibly recycled.

The outcome

The completed works removed a structurally compromised Robinia that contained a cavity within the stem and other significant defects, eliminating the risk it posed to the property and surrounding access areas.

The Sycamore was successfully reduced to a more manageable size, improving clearance and retaining a balanced, natural appearance.
