We were recently approached by a Leisure Centre in Watford who had a large tree felling project.
25 Poplar Trees were causing damage to the running track near the relay area, as they were growing very close to its edge and lifting it up. This meant that the potential cost of repairing the running track and keeping it maintained in future years could escalate.
The running track is home to Watford Harriers Athletics Club, based at Watford Woodside Leisure Centre and Stadium, who have been bringing athletics to the district since 1925. It boasts some of the best facilities and coaching in southern England.
The Leisure Centre approached Artemis as they knew we were a reputable company with the skills and equipment to do the job and we were happy to help.
Our team went in to remove a row of 25 Lombardy Poplar (Populus Nigra) Trees. They all were well established at between 17 to 20 metres in height and some with a spread of 10 metres.
The work took about two weeks in total to complete, and all the trees were felled to ground level. The customer required the stumps to be treated with one application of glyphosate to prevent regrowth.
But our work didn’t stop there, as the remains of the trees needed to be cut up, cleared, and taken away. This involved sending in our large capacity woodchippers and our new 18-ton grab lorry to pick up and take away the logs and other debris from the project. Our team also needed to negotiate a very uneven surface to drive in and out of the site which made it a bit more difficult to drive our equipment to the job area.
Aaron Walsh, Commercial Director commented:
“This was an interesting project to work on as the access was difficult and the trees were very well established. We had our best climbers on the job and completed the work ahead of schedule. As you’d expect, there was a lot of left over wood, which made excellent use of our new grab lorry. All our waste materials are taken off site to be recycled, so the grab lorry is a very welcome addition to our fleet and especially useful on larger jobs such as this.”
