Tom Tonge’s journey with us has been a remarkable success story. Joining Artemis in August 2020 through our Apprentice Scheme at the Artemis Academy, Tom has steadily advanced his career to become an integral part of our team.
So, how did Tom find his way to Artemis? After graduating with a BSc in Geography from Newcastle University, Tom moved to France to work during the ski seasons. When the pandemic struck, he returned to the UK and sought a new career path. Drawn to the apprenticeship by the prospect of working outdoors and at height, Tom was excited by the challenge of climbing trees. He also valued the opportunity to earn a qualification that would pave the way for his future.
Tom excelled in his first year, completing Level 2 and then earning numerous certificates and qualifications, including Customer Service Skills and IPAF (allowing him to operate our MEWP (Mobile Elevating Working Platform), all while gaining invaluable hands-on experience. He shared, “I’m not as confident with computers and admin due to my dyslexia, so working outside really appealed to me.”
After finishing his apprenticeship, Tom advanced to the role of Team Leader, managing teams ranging from 2 to 6 people. Richard Forrow, Compliance Manager, remarked, “Tom was one of our Fasttrack apprentices. We recognized him as a rising star due to his rapid learning, competence, and significant potential.”
Tom has now broadened his role by taking on quoting duties. Balancing his week between three days ‘on the tools’ and two days dedicated to quoting, he enjoys the variety this offers, giving both his body and mind a beneficial break.
In November 2023 Tom gained his Professional Tree Inspector (PTI) qualification, which will enable him to conduct reports and surveys, enhancing his expertise in the industry. Tom is eager to further develop his skills, including becoming a more efficient climber, increasing his quoting responsibilities, and mastering company systems.
Tom shares, “Working at Artemis has provided me with a clear career path and stability. With a company van and a new home, I feel secure and supported. I enjoy working with like-minded people and appreciate the variety each day brings. The company is fantastic to work for, treating us to enjoyable trips and social events. It truly feels like being part of a work family.”
