How to Care for your Trees in Hot Weather

As temperatures rise, it’s not just lawns and flowerbeds that feel the heat. Trees, too, can suffer during hot, dry spells. Whether you have newly planted saplings or mature trees, hot weather brings unique challenges that require a bit of extra attention.

Here’s how to keep your trees healthy, hydrated, and thriving during the summer months.

Water Wisely and Deeply

Trees need more water during hot spells, but how you water is just as important as how much.

  • Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.
  • Use slow, deep watering to encourage roots to grow down into cooler, moister soil. A soaker hose or drip irrigation system works well.
  • Mature trees benefit from a deep watering once a week. Young or newly planted trees may need watering 2–3 times per week.

Mulch to Keep Roots Cool

A good layer of mulch can make a big difference in hot weather.  Mulch is a layer of material spread on the surface of soil to help improve growing conditions for plants and trees. It can be made from organic materials like wood chips, bark, leaves, straw, or compost

  • Spread a 2 to 4 inch layer of organic mulch (like wood chips or bark) around the base of the tree.
  • Mulch helps retain moisture, regulates soil temperature, and reduces competition from weeds.
  • Keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot or pests – a 6-inch gap is ideal.

Watch for Signs of Heat Stress

Trees can’t sweat, but they do show signs when they’re struggling with the heat.

Common signs include:

  • Wilting or curling leaves
  • Yellowing or scorched leaf edges
  • Premature leaf drop
  • Slowed or stunted growth

If you see these symptoms, increase watering and check for root damage or pests,

Inspect for Pests and Disease

Heat-stressed trees are more vulnerable to infestations and disease.

  • Regularly inspect bark and leaves for signs of trouble (chewing, boring, mildew, fungus).
  • Hot, dry conditions can lead to outbreaks of aphids, spider mites, and other pests.

If you’re unsure, Artemis can help diagnose and treat the issue before it becomes serious.

Protect Young Trees

Newly planted trees are especially vulnerable in hot weather because their roots aren’t yet established.

  • Stake if needed to prevent wind damage
  • Keep soil consistently moist (but not soggy)
  • Consider using shade cloth or tree guards if planting in high-exposure areas

To Summarise

Hot weather can put trees under real stress, but with the right care, they can survive and even thrive through the summer. Water smart, mulch well, and keep an eye out for warning signs.
