We’re thrilled to introduce the newest additions to our team: Allan, Calum, Harry and Haiden, who have recently enrolled in our Apprentice Academy. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they share a common passion: tree climbing. Our Marketing Manager, Juliet, caught up with them to learn more about their motivations for choosing this career path.
The Artemis Academy was established in January 2019 with a clear objective: to train the next generation of tree surgeons to meet our own high standards. Through a comprehensive 2-year apprenticeship program, which blends practical on-the-job experience, classroom learning, and industry recognised qualifications, we aim to produce some of the finest newly qualified arborists in the industry.
Let’s meet our newest team members individually below:
Allan
Allan worked in the hospitality industry for nine years in both London and Watford, working as waiting and bar staff. Although he enjoyed this work, it involved a lot of evening and weekend work.
He saw the Artemis Apprenticeship Scheme on Indeed and was interested in applying. He came in to do a trial week and could see a future in it, plus the hours would be better. It would give him a better work/life balance.
So Allan decided to go ahead and join the Academy and has enjoyed his first five months at Artemis.
Allan enjoys the teamwork. He likes the variety of the job – working with different teams, on different jobs and in different places. He loves being outdoors and on the road.
Outside of work Allan likes Crafts and DIY. He enjoys oil painting and his artwork that we’ve seen so far is very impressive.
Calum
Calum joined Artemis just one month ago on our Apprenticeship Scheme.
He’d studied Graphic Design but decided that wasn’t for him. Although he enjoyed it, he wanted to work outside.
His first few jobs were at an Electrical Wholesaler and as a Forklift Driver. However, it was when working on surveying Drainage Systems that he realised how much he enjoyed working outdoors and liaising with clients.
When he was younger Calum had enjoyed climbing so the idea of working outside and at height appealed to him. Therefore, he didn’t hesitate to apply to the Artemis Academy.
He really enjoys teamwork and the fact that he works with different teams on different days. He also enjoys visiting lots of different sites to carry out the tree work. He’s learning something new every day and likes the prospects that the Artemis Academy will offer him in the future.
When he’s not at work Calum enjoys playing football and spending time with his friends.
Harry
Harry studied at Swansea University for six years and gained a Masters Degree in History. His first job was in Administration working at home and he missed the interaction with others – it was quite lonely. He decided he wanted to work both outside and with people.
He came across the Artemis Academy on Indeed, along with a variety of other jobs, but it was Artemis that appealed most because of the tree climbing aspect. It sat well alongside one of his leisure interests, which is Bouldering.
The apprenticeship scheme looked very well structured and so he decided to apply. He liked the idea of getting the relevant qualifications while working on the job.
Since joining, Harry has loved the job. He enjoys working with people and has made good friends. The team are always there to lift spirits and it’s a good community to work in.
In his spare time, as well as Bouldering, Harry volunteers at the Imperial War Museum, enjoys exploring London and going to the theatre.
Haiden
Haiden’s background is as a motorbike mechanic, an interest that he still pursues in his spare time.
He had helped a friend who worked as a Tree Surgeon out on a few of his jobs, and found it really interesting, so decided to apply to the Artemis Academy.
Haiden has been with us for just over a month now and is settling in well. He is sure he’s made the right career decision. He loves the camaraderie and site banter. He is happy being part of the tree surgery community and very much enjoys working outdoors.
When he’s not working, he is an Army Reservist and enjoys working on vehicles, and of course riding motorbikes.
From speaking to the new team members, Juliet noted that all four of our new recruits share a common passion for learning and a desire to work outdoors. While some have prior climbing experience and others do not, they are all eager to succeed in our Apprentice Scheme.
“What intrigued me most was the common theme when asked about their favourite aspect of working with Artemis so far. Each of them expressed appreciation for the strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie that extends beyond the usual work hours. Not everyone has the privilege of enjoying their job and the people they work with, but it seems our new team members have found just that!”
