Tree pollarding is essentially the removal of all branches and most of the limbs so only the trunk, and sometimes a basic framework of major limbs, are left.
Once a tree has been pollarded, it is given time to regrow, before the process is repeated.
Originally, this management method was carried out to stop browsing animals reaching the new shoots and growth within the woodland environment.
