We always like to support a worthwhile cause and are delighted to share that our MD, Simon, will be participating in a Charity Bike Ride organised by Fund4Trees.
The 15-mile ride takes place on 14 May around Brighton with ‘pit stops’ for young tree maintenance (YTM) workshops for children in two schools. As with previous years, these will be engaging events and very much interactive ‘educational workshops’ with the school children. A pit stop for lunch is kindly sponsored by David Archer Associates: Arboricultural & Ecology Consultants.
Another eagerly anticipated pit stop will be to meet Peter Bourne, Elm Expert, with whom we will be visiting Preston Park to see some of the largest Elms in the UK. We will see the surviving Preston Twin which stands tall, in honour of its former sibling. The Preston Twins were the last of their kind in the UK, thought to be the largest and oldest English elms in the world at around 400 years old.
The ride will end with a tree maintenance session with volunteers from the nearby Racehill Community Orchard. The Orchard is situated on three acres overlooking Whitehawk and down to the sea. It boasts native species of plants – including spear thistle, sycamore, wild parsnip, field scabious, wild basil, and wild marjoram – as well as local wildlife.
The ride also forms part of the “Brighton and Hove Tree Festival”. Running over two weekends in May, the Festival offers a host of free family events for everyone to enjoy.
Fund4Trees is a charity Artemis Tree Services like to work closely with. The charity promotes sustainable treescapes. They have three main objectives:
- Promoting the conservation and improvement of the natural environment
- Educating the public, especially young people, about the protection and improvement of trees particularly in and around urban areas
- Advancing research in all aspects of trees.
