What Equipment Does a Tree Surgeon Use?

As a tree surgeon, it’s important to have the right equipment on hand to handle a variety of tasks. From removing branches and cutting down trees, to grinding stumps and chipping wood, having the right tools can make all the difference in terms of efficiency and safety. In this article, we take a look at some of the essential pieces of equipment that a tree surgeon might use on the job.

Machinery

First, there are the big machines. Wood chippers, are used to shred branches and other wood debris into small chips. These chips can then be used for mulch or compost, or disposed of in a more environmentally-friendly way. Our residual wood chip is sent to a recycling plant to be used as bio-fuel.

Chainsaws are another crucial tool for a tree surgeon, allowing them to cut through branches and even entire trees with ease.

Tree stump grinders are used to grind down stumps and level them with the ground.

The Air Spade is a specialised tool that uses high-pressure air to blast into soil, making it easier to conduct exploratory work around tree roots. This is also useful for protecting underground utility lines and building foundations.

The Resistograph Microdrill (IML Resi-PD400) is another tool that helps tree surgeons do their job safely and effectively. It’s used to measure the density and structure of wood and identify decay, which can be helpful when determining how best to remove a tree or branch.

Hand Tools

In addition to these larger machines, tree surgeons also rely on a variety of hand tools to get the job done. Axes and handsaws are essential for chopping and cutting through smaller pieces of wood, whilst rakes and leaf blowers are needed to clear up after a job.

Safety Equipment

Safety is of course a top priority for tree surgeons, and they’ll often wear specialised uniforms and equipment to protect themselves on the job. This includes safety hats to protect against falling branches and debris, with ear-guards to protect hearing from the machinery noise. Safety boots with reinforced toes protect feet from heavy equipment and saws. Chainsaw trousers are crucial to prevent any serious damage if a saw slips and high-vis tops ensure arborists are easy to see. Ropes and harnesses are essential for securing the tree surgeons working at heights and lowering branches safely to the ground.
