Highlights from the Chelsea Flower Show 2017

Whether you work within the landscaping industry, you are a gardening enthusiast or you are a fan of all things creative, the Chelsea Flower Show never fails to inspire, encourage and amaze professionals and amateurs alike!

As the world’s most prestigious flower show, the Chelsea Flower Show is one of the most popular annual UK events, reaching its capacity of 157,000 visitors every year. Spanning five days, from Tuesday 23rd May to Saturday 27 May, this year’s Chelsea Flower Show was just as popular as it has ever been, showcasing the work of some of the most talented gardeners, florists and photographers.

The weird, whimsical and wonderful

The Bermuda Triangle – designed by Jack Dunckley

According to the RHS, “This contemporary architectural garden is a representation of an active volcanic landscape, reminiscent of Bermuda and the Caribbean, interwoven with stunning tropical planting.” This modern, edgy design earned Jack the bronze medal, making it well worth the efforts of transporting the palm tree more than 1,500 miles for it to take pride of place at the show!

Green giant

A collection of incredibly detailed bears which had been carefully sculpted from artificial grass were a major talking point amongst visitors and participants alike at the event. Accompanied by a towering giraffe and an eye-catching penguin, the Chelsea Flower Show was temporarily transformed into a sustainable wildlife park.

 Award winners

With a plethora of entrants, this year’s Chelsea Flower Show boasted a long list of worthy winners. Separated into 6 different categories – Gardens, Great Pavilion, Floristry, Floral Arrangement, Tradestands and Portfolio Photography – there was plenty of opportunity for gardening enthusiasts and professionals to showcase their work.

A notable Gold medal winner included City Living designed by Kate Gould which won the award for Best Fresh Garden. Incorporating feature wall lighting using 3.8 miles of fibre optics with a concrete construction and plenty of luscious green foliage, City Living combines the look of a modern day apartment invaded by Mother Nature.

Another unique concept was the Silver medal winner of the Artisan gardens division entitled The Poetry Lover’s Garden designed by Fiona Cadwallader. Living up to its name, the tiered layout and curved ornaments in this garden creates a tranquil, romantic design, as though it has jumped straight out of a poetry book.

Injecting some colourful Latin American culture into the heart of Chelsea, this design entitled Inland Homes: Beneath a Mexican Sky was awarded the Silver-gilt medal in the Fresh Garden category.  It’s bright, bold colour-washed walls, turquoise pool and exotic plants instantly makes visitors feel like they’re on holiday, even in central London!
